Notes for *John MAUDSLEY-MOSELEY
600MAUDSLEY, MOSELEY - The name is found in the Doomsday Book as Moleslie, which signifies a retired hamlet. It is derived from the Saxon words meos, moss; and ley; field. ... JOHN, freeman Dorchester, Mass, 1939.
--------------------------------------------------
There is mention of John MAUDSLEY in Massachusetts Applications of Freemen, 1630-91 which states: 14 March 1638-9 John Maudsley C. R., Vol. I. p. 196.
--------------------------------------------------
598He emigrated to America in 1629, coming from England on the ship "Mary and John" commanded by Capt. Squib, and landed at Nantasket, 30 May 1629-30. He was admitted as a freeman on 14 Mar 1638. He was granted lands in 1656 and first married Elizabeth (surname unknown); secondly married Cicily (surname unknown) who d. 3 Dec 1661. John and Cicily had Thomas, b. abt 1633, d. 22 Oct 1706. [BJ's note: name of Thomas' mother conflicts with info. below. Which is correct?]
--------------------------------------------------
599According to the source,"This revision ... of this family compiled and furnished by Rev. G. S. Dickerman of Amherst, Mass. The earlier spelling of the name was MAUDSLEY. According to the manuscript of Miss Emily Moseley, deceased, of Glastonbury, Conn., ... 'the latest use of this form [Moseley] in this region is on the monumental table in the old graveyard in Glastonbury, Conn., erected in memory of Capt. Joseph Maudsley, in 1719. On a small slab near it is MODESLEY. The next to it is MOSELEY, and it has been so written since.'
John Modesley, thus the ancient record reads, had two wives, Elizabeth and Cicely. He died in 1661, and his wife Cicely in the same year. They left a son and daughter who are named, in Cicely Moseley's will, John and Elizabeth. There was a son Thomas, by the first wife, who was the ancestor of a branch which settled in the vicinity of Boston."

In April of 2005 Del Rasmussen shared an email message from Walter Nieber, both distant cousins from California. It states, "There is no proof as yet but it is believed that this Elizabeth is also "Cicely" or "Siselly", the wife of John. Some researchers have shown him with two different persons as a wife but with no evidence or any source showing that they are different." Walter cites the following sources:

John Maudsley, Dochester. Freeman Mar. 14, 1639; by w. Elizabeth had Joseph b. 1638 (Gen. Reg., Vol. 244) though son called Joseph may have been John; whether more children by w. Elizabeth is not known. John d. (Aug. 27, Vital Records) 1661 before Oct. 4, date of his inventory by w. Cicely. In will of Nov. 28, 1661 of Cicely Maudsley are named son John, da. Elizabeth, s. Thomas. This Cicely, who may be same as w. Elizabeth, d. Dec. 3, 1661 (Vital Records, Sissily Modesly d. Dec. 3, 1661 Dorchester). (Savage: Genealogical Dictionary of New England, Vol. III, page 178).

John Maudesley, Dorchester, freeman Mar. 14, 1638/9; 1st w. Elizabeth; s. Joseph b. 1638; John d. 27 (8) 1661; wid. Cicely adm. Oct. 29, 1661; she made will Nov. 28, 1661; d. 3 (10) 1661. Sons Thomas and John, da. Elizabeth (Reg. XI, 170); (Chas. Henry Pope: The Pioneers of Mass., page 307).
In records of baptisms between 1538-1631 for the parish church of St. Michael and All Angels in the parish of Croston in Lancashire County, England only one John Mawdsley fits our John; that of John, son of Richard Mawdsley, baptised Dec 31, 1611. If John did come from Lancashire County as many sources point to this would probably be him but Lancastershire County is also given as his home so there is still no certainty as to his father.

BJ's Note: I have seen sources that claim Cicely as Thomas' mother and others that state Elizabeth was his mother. Since we don't know the surname of either, and the family tree stops in the maternal line here, I guess it's up to you which you believe to be so.
