Notes for *John BISHOP
676John Bishop, immigrant ancestor, came to Guilford, CT as a member of Rev. henry Whitfield's company on 10 Sep 1639. His wife Anne and their six children accompanied him. Nothing is known of the birthplaces and dates of birth of the children of John and Anne, inasmuch as they were all born before their parents came to America.

678That part of the town which lies between Ruttawoo (East river) and Agricomook (Stony creek), constituting nearly all the present town of Guilford, was purchased of the sachemsquaw of Menunkatuck (Shaumpishuh), the Indian inhabitants consenting, Sep. 29, 1639, by Henry Witfield, Robt. Kitchel, William Leete, William Chittenden, JOHN BISHOP, and John Caffinge, in behalf of themselves and others, who (except the said John Caffinge perhaps) had some out to New Haven the same year, and who were now resolved to make a settlement at this place. ... The articles given for this tract were, twelve coats, twelve fathoms of wampum, twelve glasses, twelve pair of shoes, twelve hatchets, twelve pairs of stockings, twelve hoes, four kettles, twelve knives, twelve hats, twelve porrigers, twelve spoons, and two English coats.
