The Moseley Plot



The tombstone inscription reads in part, "In Memory of the Revd, Saml. Mofeley Pastor of the Church of Christ in Hampton who departed this life July 26th 1791 in ye 83d year of his age & 57th of his miniftry. He was an eminent Christian, a distinguished divine, a tender companion, an affectionate parent, given to hofpitality, apt to teach, refected by his breathren in the miniftry -- his praife was in the churches. The Preacher, The Chriftian, the friend, in hope are here fleeping in duft come reader be wife, that your end may be like the end of the Juft." Obviously, the colonial "f" type characters would be replaced by an "s" today.

In Debbie Inman's email to BJ which included the inscription on Bethia's stone she states, "Here lie the Remains of Mrs. Bethiah Moseley. Confort of the Revd. Mr. Samuel Moseley; She departed this life the 29th Mar 1750: in the 47th Year of Her Age. Boaft not of To Morrow." Ben adds, "Bethiah's headstone has been 'cleaned', which prob. made it more readable; one can even see the scribe lines used for lettering." The colonial "f" type characters would be replaced by an "s" today.

The tombstone inscription reads in part, "In Memory of Mrs Mary Confort of the Revd Samuel Mofeley. She was benevolent, [s]incere, And unaffectedly pious; A fond and tender parent, Fervently devoted to domeftic duties, and the care of her household. She was taken from the Fleeting things of this life March 10th 1794 AEt 73."
